Top Hunting Destinations around the World

Where Are The World’s Top Hunting Destinations

Hunting is as human as is walking up straight and language. There are even competing hypotheses that hunting may have preceded or coincided with both. So, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that wherever people settled, hunting became more than just a means of survival, but a last part of the culture. Today, those traditions are still alive in some of the best hunting destinations in the world.

South Africa

South Africa is incomparable in the variety of game and terrain. There are over 50 species, including the iconic Big Five, and endemic species you can’t find easily anywhere else. They don’t just call Africa the ‘birthplace of humankind’ to attract tourists. The earliest evidence of modern humans and hunting were uncovered in South Africa. Hunting is an ancient tradition here. We honor hunting, hunters and the hunted. Hunting in Africa doesn’t happen in small fenced-in areas where your quarry has no chance. Privately owned lodges and game reserves operate on vast, untouched territories where animals roam freely. At Avula, we’re strictly ethical hunters, and fair chase rules apply.

Mozambique

Untouched and unspoiled, hunting grounds here are remote and plentiful. The country boasts several reserves where abundant swamplands and rivers give way to grasslands and forests make for great variety and plenty of opportunities to bag some impressive trophy animals. The Zambezi river is full of enormous crocodiles, and make for an exciting hunt. Mozambique hunting season runs from May to September during the dryer months of the year when malaria is less widespread. You should always take precaution visiting malaria areas though. Plus, almost all the Big Five are legal to hunt, except for the endangered rhino of course.

Tanzania

The home of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania attracted the likes of Teddy Roosevelt and Ernest Hemingway, who fell in love with the country. It’s not hard to understand why. The country is a paradise of prized trophy animals. But Tanzania doesn’t give up its riches easily. Even today, you’ll have to contend with tropical heat, tough-going terrain and widespread malaria. And that’s only after you charter long flights into the country since no direct international flights are able to land there.

Europe

Hunting in Europe is a rich tradition. Literally, it was considered the sport of Kings. In fact, you could find yourself staying in hunting lodges that are more like castles than hunting cabins. Game species are not as varied as Africa, but there are plenty of trophy deer and bird species like pheasant and duck. You can also hunt wild boar and bear which are as thrilling as any dangerous game you can find in Africa. Most European countries have huge developed tourism industries, so tagging on visits to other attractions is easy. The development comes with its own downside, costs quickly add up and are considerably more compared to a similar luxury South African hunting safari.

Hungary

Open to the world after the collapse of the Soviet Union at the start of the 90s, Hungary has become a popular international hunting destination. Luxury hunting is unique in Hungary, hunters can choose to stay in historic castles and hunting lodges when they’re not out in the thick forests and rolling green hills. You’ll find plentiful big game; Red Deer, Roe Deer and Fallow Deer have their own hunting seasons, and wild boar and mouflon are available throughout the year. Hunters can also test their skills on a classic pheasant or duck hunt.

Serbia

Serbia may not be as well-known as some of the other hunting destinations in Europe, but it is a gem of central Europe. The hunting grounds are massive ranges spreading from flat plains to mountains ranges. You can find many of the same species as you do in other European countries, such as Fallow Deer, Red Deer, and substantial Roebuck population. Don’t forget wild boar is available to hunt too and are delicious. Bird hunting is the huge boasting flocks of wild ducks, geese, pigeon, pheasant and even quail.
