
‘Avula’ (Ah-voo-la) is derived from the traditional African Zulu word for ‘open’. ‘Karoo’(Kah-roo) is believed to be derived from the old Khoikhoi (pronounced Coy-coy) word ‘garo’ for ‘desert’.
